INFORMATIONS
GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION OF CHILE
Chile is located in the southwest coast of South America, stretching between thelatitudes 17º 30'S. It is boundaries are to the north by the Peru, in the east by Bolivia and Argentina, in the west by the Pacific Ocean and in the south by the South Pole. It covers an area of 2.006.626 Km2, from which 756.626 Km2 correspond to the called American Chile and its oceanic islands and 1.250.000 Km2 to the Antartic Chile. Chile is divided into 13 administrative regions.

More than the 50% of the whole population of Chile lives in Santiago, the Chilean capital, located in the metropolitan region. This city develops as the administrative and political center. Its modern constructions and old areas where the classical style is still preserved, remindus continuously its past of Spanish settlement.
   
THE MAGALLANES REGION

The region of Magallanes is located in the South end of the Chilean Continental Territory and part of the Antarctic Continent, stretching from the 52º parallel in the southern Patagonia, including the occidental section of the Island of Tierra del Fuego and the adjacent archipelagos to the south and west.
   
ACCESS ROUTES TO THE CITY
Santiago - Punta Arenas
There are three trading airlines that fly daily from Santiago to Punta Arenas. The flight last about three hours and a half and makes a call in the city of Puerto Montt.
Punta Arenas - Porvenir
By sea. Daily departures from the Tres Puentes pier. By air. Daily departures, twice a day, excepting on Sundays, Time of duration: 15 minutes.

By air. Three days a week. Time of duration: 2 hours.

Punta Arenas - Puerto Natales (250 km.)
The trip is done by land. There are buses witch departure 8 times during th edya from the city, apart from priva tourism transports which has special schedules of departures. You can travel by means of charter flights.

By land just by special buses for tourism.
Puerto Natales - Monte Balmaceda
Connected just by sea, sailing through the Río Serrano (Serrano River)

Connection by land by regular buses, in a trip that lasts about 4 hours.
Calafate - Río Gallegos (300 Km.)
By land by regular buses. Daily departures. By air, daily flights on trading airlines. In Río Gallegos there is an international airport that connects Buenos Aires and the Ushuaia city.
   
FLORA AND FAUNA  
In the fauna of the region of Magallanes, outstand the patagonian guanaco (Lama guanicoe), a camel-like llama; the lesser rhea (a type of ostrich); the puma (felis concolor), the condor, the huemul (hippocamelus bisulcus) (a type of deer); the red fox, the grey fox, a type of dolphin called tunina overa (cephalorhynchus commersonii), the otter and the magellanic penguin.
The flora is characterized by woods where you can find species like the coigue (nothofagus betuloides), a beautiful kind of oak; the lenga (nothofagus pumilio), the canelo (drimys winteri) and a variety of bushes and shrubs like the perennial ciruelillo (embothrium caccineum), the fuchsia magallanica), the calafate (berberis buxifolia), the broom sedge (adropogan argenteus).

REQUIREMENTS TO ENTER THE COUNTRY:
Passport or visa depending on the nationality of the passenger.
   
PREVENTIVE MEAURES:
Vaccinations are not required at present, but some presentive measures are taken in cases of typhoid fever, A Hepatitis and tetanus.
   
TEMPERATURES
Bacause of the length and narrowness of the territory, Chile shows a wide variety of climates:
Desert-like in the north, Mediterranean in the central zone, and in the southern end of the country it is rainy and cold. The temparatures range from 11º to 15ºC in the Patagonia during the summer and between 4.6º to -1ºC in winter.
 
   
CLOTHES TO WEAR  
The nights and sometimes the days are cold in the Patagonia. It is advisable to wear: sweaters, windbreaker or parka, water prof clothes, thermal clothes, jeans, wool hats and gloves. For the excursions or trekking, we advise to have two pairs of shoes or comfortable boots (hiking-boots)  
   
BUYINGS  
Punta Arenas and Ushuaia are duty-free zones, where you can buy electronic and photographic devices, food, clothes, etc. Puerto Natales and Calafate have a wide commerce area. There are also, all over the way, small kiosks where you can buy beverages, handicraft, cigars, etc.
